A self-proclaimed prophet in Jalandhar is spreading Christianity, influencing conversions

Two major problems have intensified in Indian Punjab these days, one is the spread of drugs and the other is the process of religious conversion. Both these problems are not only affecting the social structure of Punjab but are also challenging the entire social fabric of the province.

In Indian Punjab, a self-proclaimed prophet has emerged. Baljinder Singh has called himself a prophet and he is spreading his beliefs to thousands attending his gatherings and converting their religion.

Under the influence of this self-proclaimed “prophet” Baljinder Singh, many people have converted to Christianity, although this trend was previously limited to religious Sikhs, now Jat Sikhs have also been included. This is a clear change that is affecting the entire Punjab.

About ten years ago, the number of Christians in Punjab was a small percentage which has increased to about 15 percent. The main reason for this is the increase in the process of religious conversion and the activation of new missionary institutions in Punjab. In many places, Christian missionaries are encouraging people to convert and are providing them with religious teachings and economic assistance.

Baljinder Singh, who has declared himself a prophet, claims that the purpose of his life is to show people the true path of religion and to uplift them spiritually. Singh says that initially only religious Sikhs were being converted, but now Jat Sikhs are also being converted. 10 years ago, the Christian population in Punjab was 2 percent, but now it has risen to 15 percent.

According to a website created for Baljinder Singh’s preaching, the self-proclaimed prophet was born on September 10, 1982. His father was a farmer who worked a government job. Baljinder Singh received his primary education up to the eighth grade, but from that time on, demonic forces started interfering in his life which led him to join bad company and fighting with many people. Due to this, his temper and nature also changed.

According to Baljinder Singh, a turning point in his life came when he went to jail due to a big fight. While in jail, he was constantly haunted by demonic forces and tried to commit suicide several times. His parents and relatives also did not come to meet him in jail, due to which he became depressed. One night, he received a Bible from a Christian man and acted on what was written in it. There was a message in the Bible that “Wherever you go, I am with you.” Baljinder Singh says that after this message, he was able to escape from the demonic forces. One day, he fell ill and he suffered blood loss. After a priest prayed for him, his blood loss was restored in just two hours.

Baljinder Singh’s ministry began in 2016 in a small church in Chandigarh. Initially, the church had only 100 members, but in late 2016, he established another church in Jalandhar, which had 50 members. Over time, under Baljinder Singh’s leadership, the church grew in size and by 2017, thousands of people were attending his services. People of all ages and ethnicities attend his services every Sunday in Jalandhar and Chandigarh. The number of people attending his services is increasing every year, and by 2019, Baljinder Singh’s ministry had reached millions of people per month.

Baljinder Singh’s church provides holy oil and water, but it is only available in the Jalandhar and Chandigarh churches, and it is not for sale.
