The first phase of local government elections is all set to be held in the Muzaffarabad Division of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on November 27 (Sunday).
While addressing a joint press conference in AJK, Commissioner Masood ur Rehman and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Irfan Masood Kashfi said that all necessary arrangements have been finalized to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of local body elections in Muzaffarabad Division.
A week earlier, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had decided upon conducting the local government polls in three separate phases due to insufficient security personnel.
The local government elections in Muzaffarabad Division are going to be held on November 27 (tomorrow) while elections will be held in Poonch division and Mirpur division on December 3 and 4, respectively.
Commissioner Masood Ur Rehman confirmed that staff at the polling stations had been trained and assigned their duties at their respective stations in the three districts which fall under the jurisdiction of Muzaffarabad division.
Masood Ur Rehman added that peace and coordination committees, which comprised of the indigenous people and government officials, had been constituted at each polling station to maintain harmony during the polling.
The commissioner revealed that 7,785 polling staff had been assigned duties on 1,323 polling different stations in all three districts of Muzaffarabad division, adding that polling material had been transported safely at the offices of returning and assistant returning officers.
Commissioner Masood Ur Rehman said that the presiding officers had been empowered with magisterial powers to implement the code of conduct issued by the ECP under election laws and criminal procedure code (Cr.PC).
