Palestinian journalist for Al Jazeera was reportedly shot and killed, while on duty, in the West Bank area. According to reports of a Qatar-based channel, Shireen Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli troops while covering the situation of unrest in the West Bank.
According to Arab News, Shireen Abu Akleh was shot at and died shortly after, while an Al-Quds journalist was wounded but confirmed to be stable. The Palestinian health ministry reported the journalists were struck by Israeli fire. Video footage which has since surfaced, shows Abu Akleh wearing a jacket that says “PRESS”.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said that its forces had been attacked with explosives during an operation in Jenin, following which they retaliated by firing back. The Israeli forces said that an investigation has been initiated and that they are “looking into the possibility that the journalists were hit by the Palestinian gunmen”.

It is pertinent to note that Israel has been critical of Al Jazeera’s media coverage of the West Bank prior to this incident. Earlier, Al Jazeera reporter Givara Budeiri was detained for covering a protest in Jerusalem last year, confirmed Arab News. At the time, Budeiri was treated for a broken hand for which her employer had blamed the authorities.
