Lahore, 2nd February: A newly-built statue of Pakistan’s national poet Allama Mohammad Iqbal has drawn criticism on social media.

Baaghi TV: A large sculpture of Allama Iqbal installed at a Lahore park has disappointed the citizens who are now calling the authorities to remove it.

The newly-built statue has been placed at Lahore’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park but has failed to match the iconic personality of Allama Iqbal.

People on social media have sharply criticised the quirky sculpture that needs to be removed soon.

The debate started when a social media user posted a picture of the oversized bust condemning its artistic accuracy. She wrote, “There’s nothing wrong in this but it doesn’t look like Allama Iqbal.”

Within a few hours, the post went viral with Twitterati demanding the provincial authorities to replace it as soon as possible.

However, according to a local media report, it turned out that the sculpture was not made by a professional artist but by the park’s gardener who made it in good faith as an amateur tribute to the national poet.

The statue had been unveiled on the 73rd Independence Day at Lahore’s Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park.

According to recent reports, after severe criticism, the statue is being removed now.
