Heavy snow in Murree leads to traffic jams and stranded vehicles

Jan 8, 2022: Roads in Murree are lined with vehicles and citizens are stranded in the bitter cold, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement, assuring the nation that relief measures were being taken.

The army’s media wing said, “All the trapped people will be shifted to five army relief camps in Murree where they will be provided food and shelter.”

“Army relief centres have been established at Army School of Technicians Barian, Military College Murree, Jhika Gali, APS Kuldana, and Station Supply Depot Sunny Bank,” according to the statement.

The statement added that Frontier Works Organization (FWO) bulldozers and army engineers were “busy keeping the roads open to help people without interruption”. The ISPR said the National Highway Authority (NHA), FWO and Army Engineers had opened and cleared the Murree Expressway for any fresh snowfall.

The statement said, “All resources have been mobilized for engineers and machinery in Murree Division and they will remain in the field till all evacuations have taken place.”

“Special arrangements are made to evacuate people on military transport and a Central Control Division has been established at Murree Division.”

The statement said rescue centers have been set up at APS and Army School of Logistics Kaldana. The statement also said that heating arrangements have been made in all the relief camps and the army is being shifted to areas where there is no machinery to clear the traffic.

On the other hand, rescue and relief operations are being carried out by Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in Murree and Galyat.  According to a PAF statement, on the special instructions of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sadhu, Chief of Air Staff, PAF, PAF bases Kalabagh and Lower Topa are increasingly participating in relief operations in the affected areas. ۔Crisis management cells have also been set up at both the bases to facilitate the stranded personnel and families.

PAF personnel have already rescued several families and relocated them to safer places. Helicopter operations will also be launched to evacuate stranded tourists once the weather conditions improve, PAF said.
