The Indian Army is considering a proposal that seeks to allow the country’s youth specially female to serve the force for three years under a new “Tour of Duty” (ToD), similar to a model which is followed in China and Israel. Under ToD civilians could be allowed to join the force for a three-year tenure as officers and in other ranks for a variety of roles, even frontline fighters. Similar to other common techniques, it would focus on the discipline of a formation of the army, moving to the cantonment and finally posting at the borders. Col Aman Anand says, “this is a golden opportunity for the youth of the country who aspire for the uniform and are attracted to an army man’s life”.
