Arshad Nadeem – truly a son of the soil, making waves across the globe. Who is Arshad? A pertinent question that crosses every Pakistani’s mind. A young boy of humble origins, a Punjabi, but a Pakistani from Mian Channu, who baffles the world by his record breaking javelin throw at the world Olympics in Paris this year, in August 2024.

He threw a mind blowing 92.97 meters long distance throw only to bewilder and baffle his audience who were awestruck and super thrilled at his incredible performance.

Well done!

Neeraj, his sparring partner from India, a gold winner from previous years threw the gauntlet, in a bid to out do our desi munda (rustic boy).

But who knew what luck had in store for the both. Neeraj was trailing behind with a 88 meters throw, a huge target undoubtedly.

The character shown by Neeraj is awe inspiring. His mother back home was full of praise for Arshad. Praying for him magnanimously and generously. A mother’s heart is a mother’s heart. Neeraj and Arshad both, after all, represent this side of the world, where we have interconnecting bonds across India and Pakistan. We do share common values and bonds. The flamboyance, chivalry has been the hallmark of our Punjabis.

Arshad’s mother has been pretty much the same, exhibiting love with same fervor and enthusiasm. An excellent display of humility, humbleness, and modesty demonstrated by both the mothers.

Well, we as a nation are obsessed with cricket and the cricket mania. Where so much happens making the whole selecting process shady and tainted. Now comes this boy from Mian Channu.

He brought Pakistan fame and glory in the most troubling times. His contribution came about like a refreshing summer breeze, the country heaving a sigh of relief after a protracted and long turbulence that we’ve seen in the country for the last two years.

This may also be a turning point in the history of two belligerent countries. Although India has leapfrogged, and made progress by leaps and bounds compared to Pakistan, the land of the pure and as for ourselves we still seem to be jumping out of the hoops, clearly not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

But on the diplomatic front the present government in my opinion must invite Neeraj and his mother to Pakistan. There must be some occasion to summon both the mothers and confer upon them the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz for their exceptional conduct handling media at the international level. Both being from the most humblest backgrounds. I met our provincial minister yesterday at a restaurant for minorities – a Sardar sahib who looked impeccable in a white shalwar kameez and a traditional turban, with a dear friend of mine, Nasir Chaudhry who went up to the gentleman and introduced me to him impromptu.

He is a handsome man with a captivating demeanor.

I shared my same view of diplomacy with him to which he agreed. Pakistan must endeavor to invite both the mothers. This may well be a start of the softest diplomacy across the countries. Thawing simmering tensions and starting to build better relations among the belligerent states.

Time for Pakistan to be investing more in athletic sports. Leave aside cricket for a moment. My advice to the heads of the corporate world and other such like organization’s is to invest more in this age-old sport being played in the world arena. This remained a very hot sporting event since the start of the Olympic games about 1700 years ago. It first started in Greece. Thereafter in different countries periodically.

Don’t ignore people like Arshad from the villages. Who knows who is out there waiting for our patronage, exploring in him or her the potential of a particular sportsperson vying to reach the sublime heights.
