ATC indicts 89 in Priyantha Kumara lynching case

Mar 12, 2022: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday indicted 89 people accused of killing 49-year-old Sri Lankan factory manager Priyantha Kumara Diawadange in Sialkot last year on allegations of blasphemy.

Judge Natasha Naseem of Gujranwala Special Anti-Terrorism Court heard the case of Kumara murder in Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore. The prosecution filed separate challans against the accused adults and juveniles in the case. The first challan named 80 accused while the second challan included the names of 9 minors.

In the challan, the prosecution included accounts of 40 witnesses, videos of the incident, digital evidence, DNA evidence and forensic evidence. The court summoned 14 prosecution witnesses for a hearing on March 14.

Kumara was lynched by a mob comprising hundreds of protesters, including the employees of the factory he was the manager of, on December 3. The mob had tortured him to death and later burnt his body. A first information report was registered against 900 workers of Rajco Industries on the application of Uggoki Station House Officer Armaghan Maqt under sections 302, 297, 201, 427, 431, 157, 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code and 7 and 11WW of the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Scores of suspects were arrested in the following days.
