Sydney, April 26 2021: Technology giant Facebook has removed Australian MP Craig Kelly’s page on account of it publishing and disseminating what they call misinformation during the pandemic.

Kelly who has strong views against prevalent issues such corona vaccines, climate change and who advocates unproven medical treatments for covid-19 has previously had some posts deleted by the social media platform. Facebook made a public statement on Monday saying it was against company policies and community values to allow people, even elected officials to share misinformation that could to lead to imminent physical harm. They say Kelly’s claims about the virus have been debunked by medical science and public health experts.

According to data tool CrowdTangle, the politician’s Facebook account which has 6 million video views and 5 million interactions in 2020 alone, has also frequently downplayed climate change. In an interview to public press broadcaster ABC, Kelly said Facebook’s decision was tantamount to censorship and that the idea that the tech giant thought they are the sole purveyors of truth is outrageous.

The social media platform had earlier issued warnings about certain posts and how they violated community guidelines and values and later removed some posts before finally taking down the whole page.

This year in February, Kelly, now an independent member of parliament, quit the conservative government after being called out by Prime Minister Scott Morrison over the former’s public statements and his failure to sack an aide facing multiple allegations of inappropriate touching.
