The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced, on Monday, that the T20 World Cup will be moved to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from India due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the details, BCCI official Arun Dhumal said: “We have informed the International Cricket Council (ICC) about the decision to move the World Cup to the UAE. We were left with no option as the COVID situation is not clear and the travel restrictions remain.”

Arun Dhumal added: “The dates will more or less be the same and we will work out the details soon.”

As a result, the ICC had given BCCI a deadline of the end of June to decide the host country for the T20 event due to the high number of Covid-19 cases in India.

BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla has said that the qualifier matches may be played in Oman while the remaining matches will be played in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.

India has eased some of the lockdown restrictions in recent weeks, but April and May have seen alarming increases in coronavirus rates.

The BCCI had already relocated the suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) to the UAE in September-October after coronavirus cases surfaced among the players.
