Beirut Blast: More than sixty lives lost, thousands injured

BEIRUT: A bomb blast near the Lebanese capital, Beirut, killed more than sixty people and injured more than 3,000 others, based on reports.
According to Baaghi TV reports, Aya Majzoub who is a Lebanon and Bahrain Researcher at Human Rights Watch, took to Twitter to share an update of the horrific tragedy. Majzoub wrote, “63 killed and 3000 injured in #BeirutExplosion so far.”
According to eyewitnesses, the blasts took place in an ammunition depot located in the port area, 20 kilometers north of Beirut. The blasts were heard several kilometers away, destroying buildings and burning dozens of vehicles parked on highways.

The cause of the blasts was not immediately clear, Lebanon’s head of general security, Abbas Ibrahim, told reporters that “highly explosive material” had been placed at the site of the blasts.This content was confiscated some time ago. According to reports of Al Jazeera, approximately 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were stored in the area without any safety measures which may have led to the horrific explosion.

It should be noted that Nasif Hatti resigned from the post of Lebanese Foreign Minister yesterday, after which the President and Prime Minister of the country had appointed, Sherbal Wahba, as the new Foreign Minister.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, brazenly acknowledged the deadly attack in Lebanon. He said that Israeli forces first attacked and destroyed Saad Hariri’s compound inside Lebanon in self-defense.
Majzoub conitnued to add that many hospitals within the city are full in the aftermath of the blast with patients being taken to Nabatiah and Tripoli for medical assistance. Majzoub further stated, “God knows what poison we are inhaling and what long term effects will be. Heart is breaking into a million pieces tonight.”
She concluded the tweeted with an expression of grievance, “Heart is breaking into a million pieces tonight.”
