Bermuda Becomes Least Populous Country to Win an Olympic Gold

Athlete Flora Duffy has won a Gold Medal in the Women’s Triathlon at Tokyo Olympics and has made history by making Bermuda the world’s least populous country to win a Gold.

According to AFP, Flora Duffy, 33, competed in the Olympics for the fourth time and won the gold medal in triathlon from 56 competing women.

She covered the distance in one hour, 55 minutes, and 36 seconds, while Georgia Taylor-Brown of England was second and Katie Zaferes of the United States was third.

With a population of 63,000, she is Bermuda’s first-ever Olympic Gold Medalist and at the same time has made it the least populous country or region in the world to win Olympic gold.

The Premier of Bermuda, David Burt, also offered his heartfelt congratulations:

Bermuda had previously held the title of the least populous country in the world to win an Olympic medal when Clarence Hill won a bronze medal in boxing in 1976.

“I’ve been under a lot of pressure for five years and I’ve never been considered an Olympic favorite,” said Duffy, 33.

“I’m sure everyone in Bermuda will be going crazy with joy, which is why it’s so important to me. It was my dream that came true today,” she said.

As a child, Duffy was offered to represent the United Kingdom, but she turned it down and made history by becoming the first woman in the world to win the 2018 Commonwealth Games for Bermuda.

“I am proud to be the first athlete and female athlete to win a medal for Bermuda, and I hope it will inspire many in my country,” she said.

The 51-kilometer triathlon started 15 minutes late due to slippery rain, but after four laps, Duffy regained control of the race and dominated the field.
