Feb 9, 2022: According to a report by the AFP, the world’s largest cut diamond, the 555 carat “Enigma” went under the hammer for $3.16 million ($ 4.3 million, 3.8 million euros) in London on Wednesday, when it was recently unveiled for the first time.
The rare black, or carbondo, diamond is thought to have formed when a meteorite or asteroid hit the Earth 2.6 billion years ago. The 555.55 carat, 55-face diamond fetched $3.16 million, excluding the buyer’s premium, at the online sale of the famous Sotheby’s auction house in London. Carbonados are usually found near the surface of the earth, suggesting extraterrestrial origin.
“It is thought that this specific type of black diamond was created either from meteoric impacts producing natural chemical vapour deposition or an extraterrestrial origin — from supernovae explosions that formed diamond-bearing asteroids which ultimately collided with the Earth,” said the auction house.
Its shape was inspired by the Middle East palm-shaped symbol of power and protection, the Hamsa, which is also associated with the number five.
The carbondo category of diamonds is not commonly used in jewelry or sold at auction, but has recently grown in popularity. They are commonly used in industrial drilling because of their exceptional hardness.
Sotheby’s called the diamond a “cosmic wonder” ahead of the sale, which also accepted crypto-currency bids.
