British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has said that laws requiring people in England with Covid-19 to self-isolate could be lifted by end of this month due to a fall in infection rates, bringing an end to all domestic coronavirus restrictions.

“Provided the encouraging trends in the data continue, it is my expectation that we will be able to end the last domestic restrictions- including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive- a full month early,” Johnson told the United Kingdom (UK) Parliament on Wednesday.

Under the present rule, people who test positive for Covid-19 have to isolate for five days. This rule is said to be expired on March 24.

Boris Johnson also added that he wishes to present his plans regarding the new Covid-19 restrictions policy when  Parliament returns from a short break on February 21, 2022.

According to the reports, he was also challenged by the lawmakers during the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session in the House of Commons about a photo published on Wednesday by the Daily Mirror newspaper showing him at a Christmas quiz during December 2020 amid strict restrictions on social gatherings back then.

He clarified that the event had already been submitted to the police for investigation as part of their probe into alleged lockdown-breaking events held at his Downing Street residence during the pandemic.

Johnson’s Conservative government dropped most remaining Covid-19 restrictions last month. According to these rules, face masks are not mandatory anywhere in England, except at London’s public transport network. Virus passport policy for seeking entry into nightclubs and large events was relaxed, as was the official advice to work from home.

The government has said its plan to switch from legal restrictions to advisory measures and treat the Covid-19 more like a flu.
