LONDON: British nurse Lucy Letby, 33, has been found guilty of killing seven babies in a neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

According to a BBC report, the young nurse has been convicted of killing seven babies and attempting to kill six others between 2015 and 2016. Court proceedings have revealed, Letby “deliberately injected” the babies with air, force-fed milk to some, and poisoned others with insulin.

British media have reported, the disgraced healthcare worker broke down into tears as the first guilty verdicts were read out by the jury on August 8, after deliberating for seventy-six hours. Letby again cried with a bowed head when the second set of verdicts was returned on August 11. Susan Letby, Lucy’s mother, reportedly claimed, “This can’t be right – you can’t be serious” as the families of the victims cried.

Originally from Hereford, Lucy Letby has been found not guilty on two counts of attempted murder. Meanwhile, the jury was unable to reach a verdict on six other charges of attempted murder. Nicholas Johnson KC of the prosecution has requested the court for 28 days to consider whether a retrial will be sought for the remaining counts.

Trial exposes “calculating and devious” Lucy Letby

The trial which started in October 2022, has resulted in the prosecution labeling Lucy Letby as a “calculating and devious” opportunist who “gaslighted” her colleagues and covered up her “murderous assaults”, reported the BBC

Convicted two years after the Cheshire Police initiated its investigation, Letby’s legal team has argued she is a victim of the “system” looking to place blame “when it failed”. The team has further argued that the babies died due to “serial failures in care”. It is worth mentioning that prior to June 2015, when Letby started her serial killing, there were less than three baby deaths per year in the neonatal unit.

Hailed as the longest murder trial in the UK, the last ten months have led to the court declaring Letby guilty over the deaths of seven babies. According to British media, Letby will be sentenced on Monday at the Manchester Crown Court. Discharging the jury, the judge informed the panel that it had been “a most distressing and upsetting case” and that they will be excused from serving juries in the future.

Letby, through her legal representation, has indicated that she doesn’t wish to attend her sentencing hearing or follow proceedings via a video link.

Although the reasons for her non-attendance have not been disclosed, the Ministry of Justice has said the Lord Chancellor is clear he wants victims to see justice being served and for the guilty to hear “society’s condemnation”, reported BBC. However, the legislation to force convicted criminals to appear in court for sentencing is currently being examined.

Community Heartbroken Over Emotional Journey

Parents of twins brothers who were among Letby’s victims informed BBC that she was a “hateful human being” who took “everything” from them. According to BBC, Letby murdered one of the twins and attempted to kill the other the next day. According to the parents, Letby caused lasting damage to their son, now 7 years old, with “a lot of complex needs” including severe learning difficulties.

A family liaison officer for the Chesire Police, Janet Moore, said that it had been a “long, torturous and emotional journey”. Moore added that the community is “heartbroken, devastated, angry and feel numb”.

While it may never be known why she did this, it is believed doctors’ warnings about Letby’s conduct were repeatedly ignored by the hospital administration who were more concerned with their reputation.

Dr Stephen Breary a lead consultant at the facility, who was the first to raise the alarm in October 2015, informed BBC that his complaints were neglected by the hospital bosses who failed to investigate the matter. He added that the administration tried to silence the doctors for their complaints against Letby after which she went on to attack five babies, killing two.

Government Announces Independent Inquiry

According to Pascale Jones, Senior Crown Prosecutor, Letby “did her utmost to conceal her crimes, by varying the ways in which she repeatedly harmed babies in her care”. According to Jones, Lucy Letby very convincingly deceived her colleagues in passing off the harm as “nothing more than a worsening” of the babies’ conditions. Jones has argued that Letby “weaponised her craft” to cause grief and death.

Despite the trial coming to its conclusion, detectives continue to review the care of approximately 4,000 babies admitted to the facility while Letby worked as a neonatal nurse, between January 2012 to the end of June 2016. The investigation includes Letby’s work placements at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital in 2012 and 2015.

The government has ordered an independent inquiry into the matter with the Department of Health announcing it would investigate the ‘wider circumstances’ around what happened. Likewise, Dr. Nigel Scawn, an executive medical director at the Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has said that he is “deeply saddened and appalled” at the crimes.
