British police launch investigation into Prince Charles’s charitable foundation

Feb 16, 2022: British police have launched an investigation into allegations that Prince Charles’s Charity Foundation was involved in a scandal involving the payment of cash to a Saudi businessman.

The probe will assess claims of a cash-for-honours scandal involving a Saudi businessman.

A statement by Scotland Yard said, “The decision follows an assessment of a September 2021 letter. This related to media reporting alleging offers of help were made to secure honours and citizenship for a Saudi national.”

There have been no arrests or interviews under caution, police added.

The head of the Foundation resigned last year after an internal investigation into the allegations. Michael Fawcett, the foundation’s chief executive, initially agreed to suspend his responsibilities following newspaper revelations about his relationship with a Saudi citizen.

Saudi tycoon Mahfouz Mari Mubarak bin Mahfouz, had donated a large sum of money to Charles for special interest restoration projects. Fawcett, a former Prince of Wales servant who has been close to Queen Elizabeth II’s heir for decades, is accused of making concerted efforts to secure Mahfouz’s royal honors and even British citizenship.

The Mahfouz Foundation was set up “to promote and advance the education of the public in the United Kingdom in the culture, history, language, literature and institutions of the Middle East”.

Mahfouz has reportedly denied any wrongdoing.

The Charles Foundation, which helps unemployed people return to work and start small businesses, said it took the claims “very seriously”. The Charity Commission, which oversees the registration and oversight of charities in England and Wales, said in November that it had launched a formal inquiry into donations from the Mahfouz Charitable Trust aimed for the Prince’s foundation.

The inquiry will examine whether “certain donations received by the Mahfouz Foundation were intended for the charity, have been used in accordance with the donors’ intentions and if they should be returned to the donor or otherwise applied for charitable purposes”.
