In the aftermath of the tragic incident involving the shooting death of a prominent figure, Nijjar, outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, it is imperative for both India and Canada to approach this sensitive matter with maturity and prudence. The allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, suggesting the possible involvement of Indian government agents in this unfortunate incident, demand a measured and thoughtful response.

The immediate consequence of these allegations has been the emergence of a diplomatic crisis between the two nations. It is noteworthy that India has categorically denied any involvement. However, instead of employing diplomacy to address the situation, India has accused Canada of failing to curb what it perceives as “Sikh extremism” and anti-India propaganda. It is vital for India to recognize that the strategy employed with neighboring nations, such as Pakistan, involving an offensive posture to deflect negative involvement, may not be effective when dealing with Western countries like Canada.

Nijjar held a revered position within the Canadian Sikh community, having served as the president of the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. He was also a proponent of the creation of Khalistan. It is important to acknowledge that Canada is home to one of the largest Sikh populations outside of India. Consequently, the murder of Nijjar cannot be ignored by the Canadian government, given its potential impact on the Sikh diaspora in the country.

In the wake of these developments, both India and Canada have taken punitive measures, including the expulsion of each other’s diplomats. India has gone a step further by announcing the suspension of visa processing for Canadian citizens. The U.S. National Security Council spokesperson Adm. John Kirby emphasized the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “They are certainly serious allegations, and we believe that determining their credibility requires a comprehensive inquiry.” While the United States has been forthright in its stance on fundamental principles, other members of the Five Eyes alliance have adopted a more restrained approach, seemingly reluctant to be drawn into the diplomatic maelstrom between the two nations.

Prime Minister Trudeau has extended an offer to the Indian government to participate in the investigation and collaborate with Canada to uncover the truth behind this tragic incident. It is imperative for India to recognize that there may be indicators or links that have led the Canadian Prime Minister to make these allegations. India should treat these allegations seriously and refrain from knee-jerk reactions. A cooperative approach will not only demonstrate India’s commitment to transparency but also ensure that its hands remain untainted if the allegations prove to be unfounded.

The latest tragic incident has exposed to some extent the Indian state sponsored terrorism. Let’s hope the world stands with Canada to hold India accountable for such heinous crimes which she has been committing both within n without!
