Celebrities support Emma Watson for showing solidarity with Palestine

Jan 14, 2022: After facing backlash and allegations of anti-semitism following a post by Emma Watson showing support for Palestine living under a repressive regime, the actress receives support from celebrities for sharing solidarity with Palestinians.

Earlier, Emma Watson was widely criticized for showing “solidarity” with the Palestinians after her post of “Solidarity is a verb” in the back drop of a Palestine flag.

However, now more than 40 celebrities have come out in support of the Harry Potter star for speaking out against human rights abuses in the region. The stars extended a joint statement condemning the anti-Semitic allegations made against Watson last week by a former UN envoy to Israel.

The Artists for Palestine issued a statement saying, “We support Emma Watson’s simple statement that ‘solidarity is a verb’, including meaningful solidarity with Palestinians fighting for their human rights under international law,”

The artists, including Miriam Margoyles, Maxine Peake, Viggo Mortensen, Gael García Bernal, Jim Jarmusch, Steve Coogan and Julie Christie stated, “We recognize the fundamental imbalance of power between Israel, the occupying power, and the Palestinians. People living under a system of military occupation and apartheid. “

The statement also condemned the ongoing protests against violence, racism and Islamophobia in the region. “We oppose the continued Israeli efforts to forcibly evict Palestinian families from their homes in East Jerusalem’s neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, Siwan and elsewhere in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.”

“Opposition to a political system or policy is distinct from bigotry, hatred and discrimination targeting any group of humans based on their identity,” it added.
