Women and children were reported dead in Atmeh, a Syrian village after the so called “successful” counterterrorism raid carried by United States (US) special forces this Thursday. First responders at the scene reported 13 people had been killed, including 6 six children and four women.

The US President, Joe Biden announced on Thursday that the Islamic State Leader (IS, formerly ISIS) leader Abu-Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was “taken off the battlefield”.

According to the UNICEF reports, six children were killed while one is in critical condition, the border town of Atmeh in the northwest of Syria due to heavy violence. Civilan-populated areas were also severely damaged, as stated by UNICEF.

“There were no US casualties. More information will be provided soon,” Pentagon press Secretary, John Kirby, stated to the media about their successful raid.

According to a US official reported by AFP and Axios, al-Qurayshi was declared dead after he blew himself up with a suicide vest, killing members of his family, women and children.

The Associated Press (AP) stated that several residents said they saw the body parts and pieces of flesh scattered near the raid site. They further informed that the raid involved helicopters, explosions and machine0gun fires.

It was the next largest raid in the province since the 2019 US assault killing the Islamic State leader Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi. However, different sources are reporting different number of casualties.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor reported nine deaths, including two children and a woman. A citizen journalist, Ahmad Rahhal, who visited the site reported seeing 12 dead bodies.

The Pentagon has not provided the details of the target of the raid. With over 13 reported casualties, the US military intends to keep running such raid and operation in order to combat terrorism.
