China reports highest daily rise in local COVID-19 cases in 21 months

Dec 26, 2021: China has reported the highest daily increase in local COVID-19 cases in 21 months as infections have more than doubled in China’s latest COVID hotspot, the northwestern city of Xi’an.

Official figures on Sunday showed that in the city of 13 million, which entered its fourth day of lock down, 155 locally transmitted cases with confirmed symptoms were detected on Sunday. The number is up from 75 on Saturday.

That drove the national daily count to 158, the highest since China managed to contain a nationwide outbreak in early 2020.

Xian reported 485 local symptomatic cases between December 9 and 25. According to Beijing’s policy, strict measures have been taken to control the outbreak so that any outbreak can be controlled as soon as possible. Residents cannot leave the city without the approval of employers or local authorities, and several rounds of extensive scrutiny have been conducted to identify cases.

Though the city has as yet not announced any infections caused by the Omicron variant, Chinese authorities have reported a handful of Omicron infections among international travellers and in southern China.

Including imported cases, mainland China confirmed 206 new cases on Dec. 25, up from 140 a day earlier.

No new deaths were reported, leaving the cumulative death toll at 4,636. Mainland China had 101,077 confirmed cases as of Dec. 25.
