As relations between Russia and China see a new, friendly turn in the history of both countries, it is believed that China might serve as a mediator between the West and Russia over the Ukraine crisis.
According to the details, ties between Russia and China seem to have strengthened, with the Russian President Vladamir Putin and the Chinese President Xi Jinping holding regular summits and the militaries of both countries participating in joint exercises and industrial efforts.
While Washington and Moscow negotiate over messages to address the Ukraine conflict, Putin is is expected to visit Beijing as one of the top guests at the Winter Olympics opening ceremony China.

However, the story is not as plain as it sounds. In 2008, the Russian President visited Beijing as a guest to the Summer Olympics, when Moscow’s troops also invaded parts of Georgia, a Caucasian state.
A mixed array of views came regarding this issue. Some said that Putin has cleverly used the Olympics as means to shift the attention of the world from the invasion to sports. Thus, it is believed that Putin might use this opportunity of the same nature to order the invasion of Ukraine while being in China.

According to the experts, the Chinese President did not look impress with Russia’s invasion of Georgia and that it will not let itself be part of another one.
“The Chinese are not thrilled with the idea of the conflict. But at the same time, Russia is a close ally (of China) in many ways,” says Rafaello Pantucci, a senior associate fellow at Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), a British think-tank.
