The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has set up separate cabins for breastfeeding newborns at domestic airports, a good move for travelling mothers.
The CAA says the cabins have been installed at Islamabad and Lahore airports.
Civil aviation officials say two cabins have been set up in the lounge for domestic and international traffic.
Often referred to as “liquid gold,” breastmilk contains powerful antibodies that help babies fight off viruses and bacteria as well as providing the perfect mix of fat, proteins, and vitamins for a baby to grow.
Yet Pakistan has among one of the worst breastfeeding rates in the world despite 89% of new mothers having every intention of breastfeeding their newborn.
However, it may be because of the stigma which surrounds breastfeeding.
Particularly in the informal sector or rural areas where women’s work requires working in public spaces e.g at informal markets, tilling the fields. Working mothers in rural areas and the informal sector face a hard choice. It is either stay at home or go to work and give the baby formula milk- which is not financially sustainable.
Government should take more initiatives to address this very issue to since normalizing breastfeeding publicly in Pakistan is nearly impossible.
