Cocaine-laden plane crashes in Mexico after airborne chase

Mexico’s defense ministry says a small cocaine-laden plane crashed in the central part of the country as authorities tried to seize it during an operation.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the plane was carrying about half a ton of cocaine and two people on board were also killed.

Mexican officials said in a statement that the plane was being used to smuggle cocaine and was traveling hundreds of miles, but crashed when it ran out of fuel when helicopters tried to catch it. Mexican military helicopters intercepted the plane in Mexican airspace and pursued it for hundreds of miles until it ran out of fuel and crashed in Botija, Queretero on Monday, the ministry said in a statement.

The plane was loaded with about 400 kilograms (880 pounds) of cocaine, the ministry said.

Monday’s crash came less than two weeks after a business jet reported stolen in Mexico crashed in a Guatemalan jungle near a hidden airstrip, leaving two men dead near an onboard stash of drugs and weapons. It had made a mysterious trip to Venezuela.

Authorities believe ships are used to smuggle drugs into the area.
