Amid a steep rise in coronavirus cases in the United States, several college students in an Alabama city are throwing ‘Covid-19 parties as a contest to see who would get infected first.

Tuscaloosa City Councilor Sonya McKinstry said students hosted the parties to intentionally infect each other with the new coronavirus, news outlets reported.

McKinstry said party organizers purposely invited guests who tested positive for COVID-19. She said the students put money in a pot and whoever got COVID first would get the cash.

The department thought the parties were rumors, but Smith said after some research, officials discovered the parties were real.

However, Smith did not clarify if an action will be initiated against those organising these parties and also didn’t relieve the name of the institutions to which these students being to.

Earlier, an 18-year-old woman was arrested the week of April 6 after allegedly claiming on Snapchat that she was intentionally spreading COVID-19, according to a San Antonio news outlet. Police began looking for her after reports that she was seen on social media claiming to be COVID-19 positive and spreading it on purpose.

Amid growing impatience over stay-at-home orders and rising unemployment, public health experts have worried that some people may try to expose themselves to the coronavirus in a risky bid to gain immunity.

One fear is the prospect of “coronavirus parties,” much like the chickenpox parties of the past that preceded the development of a chickenpox vaccine, designed to deliberately spread infection.
