June 18, 2021: The Congress has stepped up its attack on the Madhya Pradesh government after minimal reports of deaths due to coronavirus disease in the state.
Addressing a press conference on Thursday, Jaito Patwari, Congress president of the Madhya Pradesh unit, said, “A new report shows that more than 19,000 to 200,000 people have lost their lives in the state. We want correct figures to come out to ensure delivery of government schemes.”
We want accurate data to ensure the delivery of government schemes. The Congress leader also demanded that Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan correct the death toll related to Covid so that the beneficiaries of the state government’s schemes could benefit. Prior to Patwari, senior Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -led government in Madhya Pradesh had reported deaths due to viral diseases, adding that more than 100,000 people have died between April and March.
Nath accused the government of reducing the availability of vaccines in the state and black-marketing essential antiviral drugs such as remedies. The senior Congress leader was accused of inciting panic by his comments on the pandemic.
Hindustan Times reported on June 15 that Madhya Pradesh under-reported the Covid-19 deaths from January 1 to May 31 by a factor of 42, citing data. In April, when the entire country was severely affected by the second wave of the pandemic, the number of funerals in Madhya Pradesh had massively increased, sparking fears that deaths were being under reported.
On April 15, 84 bodies were found buried in the state capital, Bhopal, cemetery officials told HT, although only five deaths were reported in the city, according to health department figures. Of these 84 bodies, 47 were buried at Bhadbhada Vishram and Sharam Ghat in Subhash Nagar and nine were buried at Jahangirabad Cemetery.
According to the Health Department, 8679 deaths have been reported so far in Madhya Pradesh due to Covid 19, of which 30 were reported on Thursday. On Thursday, 145 more people tested positive, bringing the case to 788,954.
