COP26: Boris Johnson opens the summit with a “doomsday device” warning

GLASGOW: UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson inaugurates the global climate summit saying that the world is strapped to a “doomsday device.”
Likening the position of Earth, Boris Johnson compared its current state to that of the fictional secret agent James Bond — attached to a bomb that will explode and destroy the planet and is trying to work out how to defuse it.
Johnson inaugurated the world leaders’ summit portion of the UN’s climate conference, aimed at agreements to stop carbon emissions at a fast pace in order to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) below pre-industrial levels.
Among others, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended the venue and was greeted by Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. As a part of summit, PM Modi will be presenting India’s formal climate position and agenda laying out all practices and achievements in the sector.
According to the summit’s schedule, Prime Minister Modi will deliver a national statement along with other world leaders and India’s statement will come after that of Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki, with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan set to follow.
