July 27, 2021: The corona virus pandemic situation has been rapidly deteriorating after Eid al-Adha, with the national positivity rate exceeding 10 percent in at least six of the country’s most populous districts, according to statistics released on Monday.
The positivity ratio is now at its highest level in more than two months. According to the government’s National Command and Operations Center (NCOC), the nerve centre for the pandemic strategy, the latest one-day number of corona virus cases rose to 3,500 after several weeks, bringing the number of active cases in the country to 58,000.
The national positivity ratio is the highest since May 19. Experts blame violations of this standard operating procedure (SOPs) during Eid al-Adha. They pointed out that the proportion is increasing in 24 major cities, including 5 districts where the positivity rate for corona virus cases has exceeded 10%.
Karachi, Pakistan’s financial hub and the country’s most populous city, was the hardest hit, with a 24.82% covid19-positive ratio on Monday. This was followed by 19.76% in Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir, who went to the polls on Sunday.
The other three cities where the positive ratio was more than 10% was Rawalpindi, 18.59%. Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, 14.66% and the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Peshawar, 12.41%.
The federal capital Islamabad recorded a positive ratio of 10.95%. Other cities that have seen an increase in the Covid19 positivity ratio include Mirpur, Azad Kashmir, 8.54%. Abbottabad, 7.95% Nowshera 7.20% Hyderabad 6.34% Lahore, 5.64% Swabi, 4.60 ٪ Quetta, 4.46% and Mardan, 4.06%.
The NCOC said in its daily update that the national number of active corona virus cases reached 57,799 on Monday, while 3,752 more people tested positive for the virus, compared to 1,641 in the past 24 hours who recovered from the disease.
NCOC added that the number of corona virus patients in hospitals is at the top of 3,000, with 2,677 patients in critical condition being treated with 277 on ventilators.
According to the NCOC, 104 patients have been admitted to hospitals in the last 24 hours. The update said 32 corona virus patients in hospitals, including 21 with 31 ventilators, had died in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths nationwide to 23,048.
In the last 24 hours, most of the 19 corona virus associated deaths occurred in Sindh, followed by five in Punjab. Following the outbreak of the disease in February 2020, the national burden increased to 1,008,446. Of these, 927,599 have fully recovered, with a significant recovery rate of more than 90%, the NCOC said.
Raising the alarm over the dramatic increase in corona virus cases, President Dr Arif Ali urged the public to be “serious”. Things have accelerated since Eid. I was expecting and warning about it because I saw carelessness in the streets, bazaars, weddings and mosques,” he said.
He also appealed to the people to get vaccinated to protect themselves and their loved ones. “Don’t sacrifice recent gains towards stability on the altar of neglect. You are an growing nation, so the key test is to ‘rise to the challenge,'” he said.
Meanwhile, another batch of Moderna vaccine for corona virus and a consignment of CanSino vaccine arrived in Pakistan on Monday. Health ministry officials have confirmed that 3 million moderna vaccines have arrived in Islamabad under the Covax program.
Covax has promised to provide free corona virus vaccines to 20% of Pakistan’s population. So far, Pakistan has received four consignments of different coronavirus vaccines under the Covax program. These include shipments of the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines.
A spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Monday that more than 200,000 more doses of the CanSino corona virus vaccine had arrived in Pakistan. An NDMA spokesman said the vaccine had been handed over to the Ministry of Health.
