Coronavirus: Iran ready for international cooperation

Islamabad (29th Feb, 2020): Iran’s government has reportedly expressed willingness to accept international cooperation in order to contain the spread of COVID-19. 

According to reports, the government of Iran has expressed their willingness to accept ‘international cooperation’ in order to tackle the health emergency, COVID-19. The outbreak which started in Wuhan, China has spread to almost fifty countries, including Iran. While, Iran is ready to accept help from the international community, the World Health Organization (WHO) considers Iran as fundamentally able to control the situation on its own.

Iran agrees de-escalation ‘only solution’ to solve crises

The Iranian Embassy sent out a press release on Friday, with the initiative to invite global Ministries of Health and other medical experts to assess if the claims by WHO possess any merit, so that the Islamic Republic of Iran may be assured of its health-care facilities and capabilities, respectively.

Since its outbreak in late 2019, the spread of COVID-19 in Iran has been predicted by the authorities, given the severity of the novel coronavirus. Thereby, the authorities had been preparing for it to ensure that necessary preparations were in place prior to the reporting of Iran’s first coronavirus case. Additionally, the Iranian government notified media sources of its first case despite its upcoming Parliamentary elections.

According to reports, the case was made public in compliance with International Health Regulations (IHR) responsible for the international health security, which is a top priority for Iran. It was stated that such policies enable Iran and other countries protection against the consequences of political and/or information misuse, respectively.

Moreover, the Islamic state established a Corona Control Center (CCC) on orders of their Minister of Health on the 21st of January, 2020 to monitor ‘interdepartmental activities’ by means of its twelve sub-committees. Regular meetings are held at the Iranian Ministry of Health to report latest updates, confirm sources. While, the number of cases is low as compared to declared global statistics, the process to identify and treat the cases being verified to to keep the Iranian public up to date is the states’ priority.

WHO says China coronavirus not global health emergency

Transparency and authenticity of information is the primary requirement of the IHR from its member states during the time of outbreaks to ensure security against international health issues such as COVID-19. The Iranian state has consequently, acted within the provided framework to keep the international community aware of its situation and expects other countries to do the same, respectively.

In addition to this, Iran has invited medical professionals and experts from the World Health organization as well as international Ministries of Health to visit its health, medical and/or therapeutic facilities to provide the state with advice and ‘experience’ to aptly contain the virus from spreading further.

It is to be noted, that as confirmed in its press release on Friday, the Islamic Republic of Iran has declared its complete readiness for cooperation from the international community. According to reports, Iran’s efforts are not merely targeted towards its national interests rather, to ensure the safety and security of the entire region.
