South Korea reports new daily records for coronavirus cases and deaths

Nov 28, 2021: According to a study by mathematicians at Peking University, if China lifts travel restrictions and abandons its zero-tolerance policies, it could face more than 630,000 covid 19 infections a day.

In a report published in the China CDC Weekly by the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, mathematicians said that China could not afford to lift travel restrictions without more effective vaccinations or specific treatments. Using August data from the United States, Britain, Spain, France and Israel, mathematicians estimated the possible consequences if China adopted a strategy to control the pandemic like these countries.

China’s daily new cases would reach at least 637,155 if it adopted the United States’ pandemic strategy, the report said.

And daily cases would hit 275,793 if China took the same approach as Britain and 454,198 if it imitated France, it said.

“The estimates revealed the real possibility of a colossal outbreak which would almost certainly induce an unaffordable burden on the medical system,” the report said.

“Our findings have raised a clear warning that, for the time being, we are not ready to embrace ‘open-up’ strategies resting solely on the hypothesis of herd immunity induced by vaccination advocated by certain western countries.”

Mathematicians warn that their estimates are based on basic mathematical calculations and that more sophisticated models are needed to study the evolution of the pandemic if travel restrictions are lifted.

China has maintained a zero-tolerance policy against CoVID-19, saying the importance containing cases outweighs the disruptions caused from tracing and locating cases.

In China, 23 new confirmed cases of corona virus were reported on November 27, down from 25 a day earlier, the health authority said on Sunday. The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday named a new CoVID-19 strain found in South Africa, citing a number of mutations as a “cause for concern”, leading some countries to impose travel sanctions.
