COVID-19: Don’t just throw away the caution yet!
Lahore, 11th October: Coronavirus that emerged from the Chinese city Wuhan in December 2019 (hence the name COVID-19 given) is still wreaking havoc around the world.
The outbreak spread quickly across the globe in the first months of 2020 and was declared a global pandemic by the Word Health Organization (WHO) on 11 March.
A pandemic is when an infectious disease is passing easily from person to person in many parts of the world at the same time.
BBC News reports say that the virus is surging in many regions and some countries that had apparent success in suppressing initial outbreaks are also seeing infections rise again.
The United States and the United Kingdom have been struck adversely by the pandemic. The US has recorded eight million confirmed cases and 210,000 deaths so far.
Whereas, the toll in the UK is 561,000 confirmed cases and death toll recorded so far is 42,760.
However, in Pakistan the number of confirmed cases recorded so far is 319,000 and death rate is 6,570. If we look at the daily toll then today the total active COVID-19 cases in Pakistan were recorded 8,904 and 12 deaths took place on Sunday, 11th October.
Statistics show that during the last couple of months the number of affected cases decreased but now there is a surge observed in the cases in Pakistan just like other parts of the world.
It has been observed that after the government opened the lockdown and all the activities resumed in the country, coronavirus pandemic went on the rise, which was expected.
But as responsible citizens it is now our duty to keep ourselves and the others around us safe. The opening up of all the social activities in the country does not mean that we should throw the caution away!
It would be too soon to say that we are now coronavirus immune or that we have defeated the disease. It is still mandatory for us to follow the safety rules regarding the pandemic.
We are still suppose to wear a facial mask while in public and keep a required social distance among each other. Government is still urging people to avoid public gatherings.
What I have been observing is people mingling and neglecting all sorts of caution. Wedding halls have been opened and nobody seems to follow the proper SOPs. One can see a crowd of people together and that too without their face masks on.
Although educational institutes across the country are following the required SOPs after opening, but we can still observe the rise in cases among school children. What could possibly be the reason?
This means that we have become casual in our manner, kids follow the safety rules when in school but outside they and their parents are not taking care.
I would urge that we follow all the safety rules regarding the coronavirus pandemic to keep ourselves and our community safe!
