Crisis in the Middle East: US Secretary of State contacts key figures

United States (4th Jan, 2020): The US Secretary of State reportedly contacted another key figure after contacting the Pakistan Army Chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa. 

According to reports of Baaghi TV, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has reportedly contacted His Highness Sheikh Muhammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of United Arab Emirates, to discuss the ongoing situation with Iran. As reported by Baaghi TV earlier, Iranian general Qassem Suleimani was assassinated in a US airstrike.

Talking to the Sheikh of Dubai, the US Secretary said that Trump had made a bold decision to take defensive action to ensure the protection of Americans in the region. In his tweet, Mike Pompeo stated that they had discussed the joint action of the two countries with regards to the actions of the United States. He further added that they also discussed military provocations in the region and that the United States is committed to “de-escalation”.

Earlier, Pompeo had spoken to the Pakistan Army Chief, General Qamar Bajwa, to discuss the situation following the assassination of the Iranian general. According to reports, the US Secretary of State had requested General Bajwa to play a role in the deteriorating situation in the region.

In a statement posted on social networking site Twitter by Major General Asif Ghafoor, Director General of the Pakistan Army’s Public Relations (ISPR), the Army Chief called on the US Secretary of State to expand peace and order. He stated that it is in the best interest to reduce the tensions that arise as much as possible. He further emphasized that the parties should exercise patience and negotiate in the face of increasing tensions.

Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa also emphasized the need to focus on the success of the Afghan peace process, according to the spokesman.

Earlier in a series of tweets, Mike Pompeo said that Iran was involved in proxy war throughout the region, including Iraq. He added that General Qasim Sulaimani was the main protector of the proxy war, we told Iran that no more Americans would tolerate murder.

It is to be noted that at least nine people, including an Iranian general, were killed in a US airstrike at Baghdad airport. The victims of the air strike included General Qassem Suleimani, as confirmed by Iraqi media, as well as the leader of the pro-Iranian militia Al-Hashid al-Shabaabi.

Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif has responded to the US attack in Baghdad, saying that the attack on General Suleimani is global terrorism, and that the United States will have to suffer the consequences. Iranian Foreign Minister Jawad Zarif called the attack an act of global terrorism. An urgent meeting of the top security body has also been called in Iran on suspensions.

The Iranian Foreign Minister, Javed Zarif, taking to Twitter stated that the “act of international terrorism” by the United States is “extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation”.

According to the US Department of Defense Pentagon, the killing of General Suleimani was ordered by US President Donald Trump, which took action.
