Crisis in the Middle East: US Secretary of State contacts UN Secretary

United States (US) Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, reportedly contacted United Nations (UN) Secretary amid the ongoing crisis in Middle East following the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Suleimani. 

According to reports of Baaghi TV, US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, has been in contact with the UN Secretary-General to discuss the ongoing escalation in the Middle East. The UN Secretary-General has reportedly expressed concern over the rise in global tensions.

It has been reported that the UN Secretary-General has expressed that the New Year has begun with turmoil across the world, and that we are living in a dangerous time. The UN Secretary has added that we must not forget the human suffering caused by wars, the greatest cost of which is the loss of common man and that avoiding war is a shared responsibility of all nations.

It is to be noted that the recent airstrike on Baghdad’s International Airport resulted in the deaths of at least nine people including Iranian General Suleimani and pro-Iranian militia leader, Al-Hashid al-Shabaabi, respectively. Iranian Foreign Minister, Javad Zarif, consequently responded to the US attack in Baghdad, stating that the attack on General Suleimani is “global terrorism”, and that the United States will have to suffer the consequences.

In addition, Iraq has approved the withdrawal of US troops following the assassination of Iranian General Suleimani on Iraqi soil. As confirmed by Baaghi TV, US President Trump has threatened Iraq on the approval to remove US troops as Pakistan continues to call for peace in the region. Other countries including China have also called for Iran-US to negotiate with peaceful dialogue.
