Crown court finds Lord nazir guilty of sexual assault

Jan 5, 2022: Lord Nazir found guilty of sexual assault but will appeal.

The 64-year-old British Kashmiri politician has strongly denied the charges throughout and has said that he has been targeted.

Lord Nazir Ahmed, a former member of the British House of Lords, announced on Wednesday that he would appeal against the sentence handed down by a jury in Sheffield Crown Court on eight counts of alleged sexual offenses against him.

A Lord Nazir’s legal representative expressed surprise at the verdict, saying “the verdict goes against the evidence presented to the jury during the trial in Sheffield Crown Court.” “We have instructed our lawyers to appeal against the sentence,” he said.

The court found Lord Nazir guilty of attempting to rape a girl in the 1970s. At the time, Lord Nazir and the young girl, his first cousin, were teenagers. Lord Ahmed was also convicted of serious sexual assault against a boy during the same period – also the first cousin of the Lord Nazir in the case.

Sheffield Crown Court judges were told there had been “repeated sexual assaults” in Rotherham over the years. The 64-year-old British Kashmiri politician has vehemently denied the allegations and said he was targeted.

Judge Justice Lavender will decide later when Lord Ahmed will be sentenced.

At the start of the trial, prosecutor Tom Little QC told the court that Lord Ahmed had attempted to rape the girl in the early 1970’s when the defendant was 16 or 17 years old. Little said Lord Ahmed claimed the allegations were “malicious fiction” but phone recordings of conversations between the two victims showed they were not “fabricated”. The call was made by the woman in 2016 after she went to the police. The charges against Ahmed were related to two complainants – a boy and a girl – and the alleged incidents between 1971 and 1974, when he was a teenager.

Lord Nazir’s legal team argued that the whole process of investigation was abused and steps were taken to deprive Lord Nazir of a fair trial.

It is believed that those who accused Lord Nazir were his relatives. Lord Nazir and his family are believed to have been involved in family disputes with relatives over property and family matters.
