Customer Services, Public Servants and the Public

#TruckersForFreedom2022 Movement started from #Canada and is spreading around the world. It’s #WorldSpring for Freedom and Rights. #PublicServantsNotMasters is the Movement we need for our Freedom in #Pakistan.

If we say that the public or the common men are the customers of the Government, wouldn’t that sound funny to many Government Officials? While I visited various Government or Semi-Government offices, I felt that they are not just governing but ruling us as Masters and they have absolutely no concept of treating the common people fairly, what to talk about treating them as customers.

Don’t we pay for any services that we seek from the governments? We do. We not only pay for those services directly but we pay taxes, either direct or indirect. Like once we buy anything right from a matchbox to the petrol, we pay a hefty amount of tax. That tax is essential to run government affairs. But let’s see what is the Government itself?

Human beings early in history learned to live in communities for various reasons. This developed into villages, towns, cities, and countries. While living in the community, the need for safety, security, and management were essential. This requires some managers, who can effectively control and manage the basic requirements of living in the community. Again it needed a set of rules according to which you may live in a particular society, hence, the Laws evolved. As the communities grew, now more and more people were needed to manage the affairs of a society or the community. So how do we have so many people working for us to keep the societies or communities functional with minimal or no issues between the human beings? A system of Taxation evolved. Through which all the members of the societies started to contribute to pay for the management of the communities.

So the Government is a general public assigned body to govern a particular society or community, drawing its expenses from the taxes that the general public pays for such governance.

This tax is paid by every individual living in the communities, its form could be different i.e it could be a service charge or direct or indirect tax on the services utilized and or on the day-to-day purchases by the individuals. This tax is collected to run the community affairs and those who run these affairs or govern these affairs are known as governments and those who are paid out of these taxes are the government employees or Public Servants. These employees are hired to manage the societies or the communities effectively where everyone can live peacefully and freely. As the systems evolved and more authority for governing the communities was assigned to the Public Servants, the power brought in the autocracy in these employees. The terminology of Public Servants became vital and important for these employees to understand that their salaries are paid by the general public and that they must understand this and to act in the best interest of the public who pays for their salaries.

Unfortunately, lack of education brought us to the level that despite the public paying for the salaries of these officials, they are behaving like our Masters. Customer Services is a thing of the unknown as they even do not understand that each one of us or each one of the common man is a customer of the Government. Maybe people laugh at this as the basic training of these officials does not cover the aspect of Customer and Customer Services and these officials from day one are told that since they are the selected lot and creme of the nation they are superior to others. Governing a society doesn’t mean that you start to dictate and create difficult systems for the management of the day-to-day affairs of the community through which the common men suffer. This is the point where bribery starts, this is the point where corruption in a community starts. Rather than making life simple, a lot more stringent systems are evolved to make life difficult as difficulties pave the way for unjustified demands, and over and above the taxpayers become hostage to the Governments and pay sort of extortion amount for getting the things done. We created a hashtag with the slogan #publicservantsnotmasters for the reason that common people are being treated like slaves by the Public Servants. The common people or the masses also need to understand Public Servants getting paid from the money which they pay to the Governments are there to make their life easy and not difficult as we have in our country.

We know it won’t be accepted by these officials very easily as a concept of the general public being the paymaster is far fetched thing of the unknown and even knowing this is an ego issue and ego becomes dictation once you have the state power.

General awareness amongst the masses is also not easy and the biggest advantage that these governors of the society have is the lack of education and simplicity of our people.

The education may start from the hiring of the public Servants that they must treat all the individuals as their customers, they must go through Customer Services education. Those who are at the helm of affairs need to be educated and they can only be educated once the civil society starts to speak on this topic. This education must start right from the Prime Minister down below, as an educated Prime Minister could be the only hope that a trickle-down effect may come.

Once I posted the hashtag #publicservantsnotmasters on my Twitter (@sky_khi) and on Facebook I got several calls and messages that you are exposing yourself and that you are taking a big risk. What? Speaking about reality has become a scare.

It shows that those employees being paid by the general public or by the taxpayers have become our masters.
