Lahore, 18th May: Cyclone Tauktae has killed several people in India. The worst-hit states were Gujarat and Maharashtra, where thousands of homes were destroyed.
Cyclone Tauktae which rose from the Arabian Sea has wreaked havoc in several Indian states, killing more than 20 people so far.
According to officials, 3 people were confirmed dead in the state of Gujarat on Tuesday morning while 6 were killed in the neighboring state of Maharashtra.
According to state officials, 4 people lost lives in Gujarat, 2 in Goa, and 6 in Karnataka.
The storm destroyed many homes, uprooted electricity poles and trees, and forced evacuation from low-lying areas.
Major airports have been closed down in Gujarat as a precautionary measure.
So far, more than 15,000 people have been evacuated from Maharashtra and Gujarat to safer places.
The Indian Meteorological Department has reduced the severity of the Cyclone from ‘extremely severe’ to ‘severe’.
According to officials, the intensity is expected to decrease further after hitting the coast of Gujarat.
As per the latest reports, when the storm hit the coastal areas of Gujarat at around 8.30 am on Tuesday, the winds were blowing at a speed of about 150 kmph.
