It may be recalled that on April 2, the Sindh High Court had ruled on the appeals filed by four accused in the murder case following the abduction of American journalist Daniel Pearl. However, the death sentence of the main accused Omar Sheikh was changed to 7 years imprisonment.
The bench in its judgment granted the plea of the three accused and ordered their release. The convict Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh alias Sheikh Omar had the death sentence changed to 7 years imprisonment. Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, who has been in jail for the past 18 years, was expected to be released after serving a full sentence of seven years.
However, on April 3, a major breakthrough came and the Sindh Home Department, at the request of the CIA DIG, remanded the four accused in custody for another 90 days. This is the second petition in the Supreme Court against the decision of the Sindh High Court in the murder case of the journalist.
The Sindh government had on April 22 challenged the decision of the Sindh High Court in the journalist Daniel Pearl murder case in the Supreme Court. On April 28, the Sindh government had approached the Supreme Court for an early hearing of its petition.
