In a strategic political move, the PML-N government has bestowed upon Ishaq Dar the esteemed position of Deputy Prime Minister, cementing his role as a trusted confidante within the administration. This significant appointment mirrors Nawaz Sharif’s resurgence as the President of the party, indicating a calculated consolidation of power within the party’s inner circle.

Dar’s initial foray into his new role takes him to the global stage, as he attends the World Economic Forum’s special gathering in Saudi Arabia. This shift comes after a less-than-stellar performance as Finance Minister in his previous tenure, prompting his reassignment to the Foreign Ministry. Speculation surrounding Dar’s appointment suggests that it was in the works even before the PML-N assumed power, with only the timing remaining uncertain.

However, it’s worth noting that the Constitution doesn’t explicitly outline the position of Deputy Prime Minister. While PML-Q leader Pervez Elahi held the position in 2012, the creation of such roles for political expediency or to elevate favored individuals contradicts legal norms and constitutional principles.

The decision to introduce the Deputy Prime Minister role early in the government’s tenure reflects poorly on Shahbaz Sharif, potentially undermining his authority. Whether tensions will arise between Shahbaz and Dar as the latter seeks to assert his influence remains uncertain.

Furthermore, there’s a looming concern over potential conflicts regarding financial matters, traditionally under the purview of the finance minister. Despite Shahbaz Sharif appointing Mr. Aurangzeb to the finance portfolio over Dar’s preference, the conditions of Aurangzeb’s acceptance hint at a desire for autonomy. How he responds to Dar’s encroachment on financial issues could dictate the dynamics within the administration.

Public perception of these developments is less than favorable, with many viewing them as indicative of nepotism and a lack of seriousness in addressing Pakistan’s pressing challenges. The prevailing sentiment suggests disillusionment with the status quo and a desire for substantive change rather than political maneuvering within familiar circles.
