Washington, May 24, 2021: Gun related violence in the US resulted in a dozen reported deaths and 50 injuries across the country this weekend alone after President Joe Biden declared the problem an epidemic and has introduced 6 executive measures to control the crisis, including a proposal to halt sales of “ghost guns” made from home kits and empowering relevant agencies.
The fresh spate of incidents involve deaths in New Jersey, South Caroline, Georgia, Ohio and Minnesota. A house party in Camden, New Jersey resulted in the deaths of 2 people with 12 injured, whereas in South Carolina, there was one teenage girl reported dead and police ave found 3 dead on a scene in Atlanta, Georgia early on Sunday. In Ohio meanwhile, a 16 year old girl was killed and in Minneapolis, one person was killed on the eve of a rally being held to mark the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, a Black man murdered by a White policeman.
Earlier in the year, Indianapolis saw a similar incident go down in a Fed-ex building, California experienced one in an office building and Colorado saw one in a grocery store in Boulder and one on a birthday party in a trailer park where the gunman later shot himself after killing 6 others. Perhaps the most deadly is the serial shootings reported in March in Atlanta where a series of Asian women working in Spas were targeted by a gun man which left 8 dead.
Mass shootings aside, gun violence in general has escalated in the US during the past year and gun sales surged during the pandemic with 2020 being one of the most violent year in decades. The Gun Violence Archive lists 200 deaths as a result of gun violence so far this year alone.
