Jan 28, 2022: The death toll from a typhoon in three South African countries rose to 70 on Thursday as emergency teams battled to repair damaged infrastructure and help tens of thousands of victims.
Tropical storm Ana, bringing with it torrential rains, landed Monday before plowing into Mozambique and Malawi in Madagascar.
At least 70 people were killed in a storm that struck Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi, and authorities are scrambling to repair damages
Aid workers and officials from all three countries are still assessing the full extent of the damage. A total of 41 people were reported killed in Madagascar, 18 in Mozambique and 11 in Malawi.
In northern and central Mozambique, Ana destroyed 10,000 homes, dozens of schools and hospitals, and downed power lines.
Remains of the storm have passed over Zimbabwe, but no casualties have been reported. Tens of thousands of homes were damaged in the three worst-affected countries. Some fell under the torrential rains, and the victims were buried in the rubble. The bridges overflowed into the canals, while the cattle sank and sank into the fields, destroying the livelihood of the rural families.
In Madagascar, 110,000 were forced to flee their homes. Schools in the capital Antananarivo have been turned into emergency shelters.
Mozambique’s weather services expects another storm in the Indian Ocean in the coming days. Six tropical storms are expected in March before the end of the rainy season. In neighboring Malawi, the government declared a state of natural disaster. Electricity was cut off earlier in the week in most parts of the country after floodwaters hit power plants.
By Thursday, power had been restored in some parts of the country, but parts of the power grid were destroyed. “Our priority now is to restore power to health facilities, water distribution systems and schools,” National Power Utility said in a statement.
South Africa, and Mozambique in particular, has been hit by devastating storms in recent years.
