An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 on the Richter Scale hit Ladakh region on Saturday. The tremors were felt at 5:11 am, said National Center for Seismology. However, there were no reports of casualties or any damage to properties as of now. Notably, this was the third earthquake that has hit the region in a fortnight.

On February 17, a minor earthquake of magnitude 3.5 had jolted the UT. On February 13, a strong earthquake had rocked Jammu and Kashmir overnight as people ran out of their homes to escape being trapped with reports of several structures developing cracks due to the temblor.

Kashmir is situated in a highly earthquake-prone region and temblors have wrought destruction here in the past.

Over 80,000 people were killed on the two sides of the Line of Control (LoC) by an earthquake that occurred on October 8, 2005. The quake measured 7.3 on the Richter scale and its epicenter was in Muzaffarabad.
