Feb 9, 2022: According to a report by BaaghiTV, the Election Commission Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified PTI leader Faisal Wawda.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday disqualified PTI Senator Faisal Vawda over alleged concealment of his dual nationality at the time of contesting the NA election on a Karachi seat in the 2018 general elections.
Election Commission announces decision in Faisal Wawda disqualification case. A three-member commission headed by the Chief Election Commissioner has ruled in the case. Election Commission decided to disqualify PTI leader Faisal Wawda for life.
The petition filed for disqualification of Faisal Wawda stated that he had submitted fake affidavits in the nomination papers. The ECP has also directed Vawda to return the salary and other benefits he had received as an MNA within two months.
According to reports, Vawda was in possession of a United States passport at the time he filed his nomination papers on June 11, 2018. The minister remained an American national even at the time the scrutiny of his nomination papers were completed.
Petitions against Faisal Wawda were filed 2 years ago on January 21, 2020 by the opposition candidates Abdul Qadir Mandokhel, Mian Faisal and Asif Mehmood in the Election Commission. Faisal Wawda was asked about the date of renunciation of dual citizenship but got no answer.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan has clearly ruled in a previous judgment that candidates with dual citizenship must submit Certificate of Renunciation along with their nomination papers.
Faisal Wawda resigned from the National Assembly for fear of disqualification and was later elected senator. The Election Commission had reserved its decision on December 23 last year. The ECP bench had during the last hearing given Vawda the last chance to defend himself and explain his position.
