Lahore, 18th January: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has announced to suspend some of the members of the Senate, national and provincial assemblies.

Baaghi TV: According to reports, ECP announced on Monday that the membership of 154 members of the Senate, national and provincial assemblies has been suspended for not submitting statements of their assets and liabilities.

Minister for Inter-provincial Coordination (IPC) Fehmida Mirza, Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry, Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi and Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui are among the MNAs whose memberships have been suspended.

Each year on December 31, lawmakers are required to submit a statement of their assets and liabilities, as well as those of their spouses and dependent children, under the Section 137(1) of the Elections Act, 2017.

As per the Elections Commission, the membership of the lawmakers will remain suspended until they submit their respective statements.

Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi responded on his Twitter handle saying, “I filed my taxes on Dec 28, 2020, & submitted the asset declaration form with the ECP on Jan 5, 2021. Don’t understand the fuss!”

ECP suspends the membership of many lawmakers every year for not submitting their statements declaring their assets.

As per reports, last year, over 300 lawmakers had failed to submit their asset details.
