Dec 29, 2021: Egypt has “digitally unwrapped” the mummy of the famous Pharaoh Amen Hotep I, who uncovered his secrets for the first time since his discovery in 1881 without disturbing his funeral mask.
With the help of advanced digital 3D images, researchers have discovered new mummy-making techniques used for Pharaoh, whose rule dates back to more than 1,500 BC. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities said in a statement on Tuesday that the study was led by Sehar Saleem, a professor of radiology at Cairo University, and Zahi Hawass, a well-known Egyptian expert and former Minister of Antiquities.
The researchers used advanced X-ray technology, CT (computed tomography) scanning, as well as advanced computer software programmes to digitally unwrap the mummy of Amenhotep I in a safe non-invasive method without the need to touch the mummy.
The Egyptian study revealed for the first time the face of King Amenhotep I, his age, health condition, in addition to many secrets about the mummy’s unique mummification and reburial.
Analysis shows that Amenhotep I was the first Pharaoh to be mummified by arms and the last Pharaoh to have his brain removed from the skull. A tomography scan revealed that Pharaoh, who led several military campaigns during his 21-year rule, had apparently died at the age of 35 from an injury or illness.
The mummy discovered in the southern Egyptian city of Luxor is the only one that archaeologists did not remove from its narrow bands, so that the mask and flower garlands could remain preserved.
