Egyptian court sentences to death 10 members of the Muslim Brotherhood

Jan 31, 2022: According to an AFP report, an Egyptian court on Sunday sentenced 10 members of the banned Muslim Brotherhood group to death in 2015 for violence against security personnel, a court source said.

The case will now be referred to Egypt’s top religious authority, the Grand Mufti – a formality in the death penalty cases – before the court meets on June 19 to confirm the sentences. Sources said that 9 out of 10 men were detained while one was convicted in absentia. They were charged with multiple counts of violence against police in 2015 – a period that saw an increase in attacks targeting security forces.

Egypt banned the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood group in 2013 and declared it a terrorist organization following the military ouster of former President Mohamed Morsi. General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who went from being the president to ousting Morsi, has been leading crackdowns against the group ever since, killing thousands of people, including its top leaders.

Morsi died in custody in June 2019 after falling ill during a court hearing. Cairo has handed down a death sentence or life imprisonment following a large-scale trial that has been condemned by the United Nations.

Egypt, the most populous country in the Arab world, carries the death penalty for civilian offenders. According to Amnesty International, Egypt carried out the largest number of executions in the world last year, after China and Iran.

The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in 1928, presents itself as the main opposition movement in Egypt, despite decades of oppression.
