Emma Thompson recalls being “utterly blinded” in marriage to Kenneth Branagh

British actress Dame Emma Thompson DBE, in a recent interview, got candid about her relationship with her former husband Kenneth Branagh. 

The What’s Love Got to Do with It? (2022) star recalled the time she discovered that her husband was cheating on her with co-star Helena Bonham Carter. Thompson revealed that she “felt half alive” due to the pain and anguish caused by her husband’s affair. The couple married in 1989 and divorced in 1995, following Brannagh’s unfaithfulness.

The Love Actually (2003) star said that she was “utterly, utterly blind” to the fact that Brannagh “had relationships with other women” while on set. The experience taught her how “easy it is to be blinded” by the desire to deny that such a thing can happen, she said. The Matilda The Musical (2022) star added that she the lost sense of being a person worthy of love.

She added that following the devastating experience she was left her feeling like “broken dishes”, and her Sense and Sensibility co-star Greg Wise had to help her to pick up the pieces. She later went on to marry Wise in 2003 and the couple shares two children Gaia Romilly Wise, 22, and adopted son Tindyebwa Agaba Wise, 35.

The Harry Potter alum added that she has learned much from her experiences, in particular, from her second marriage to Wise.
