Oct 30, 2021: Joss Buttler’s unbeaten 71 and Chris Woakes’ impressive bowling helped England beat Australia by eight wickets to close in on the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup on Saturday.

Buttler made an opening stand of 66 with Jason Roy, who scored 22, as England reached their victory target of 126 in 11.4 overs in Dubai. Butler hit five fours and five sixes in his 32-ball innings to give England their third consecutive victory in the Super 12 stage. Woakes and Chris Jordan shared five wickets to help Australia out for 125 after choosing to field first.

After being selected to bowl for England in the Super 12 match in Dubai, Woakes caught the dangerous David Warner for one and sent him back to the pavilion.

Woakes then dismissed Glenn Maxwell and returned a 2-7 lead in his first three overs of brilliant seven bowling, with a superb catch to Steve Smith for a run. Fellow fast bowler Chris Jordan (3-17) returned an impressive 3-17 to flatten out the Australian batting despite a 44-run stand by captain Aaron Finch.

Australia’s score deteriorated to 51-5 after league spinner Adil Rashid LBWed Marcus Stones and Liam Livingstone took Matthew Wade’s wicket for 18 runs. Finch counter-attacked when he took Time Mills and Jordan to a few boundaries. He scored 47 runs with Ashton Eger, who scored 20 to lend some respect to the total.

The left-handed Agar hit two straight sixes off Woakes’ fourth over but fell to Mills while attempting another big hit.

Jordan returned to dismiss Finch and Pat Cummins, who hit the first two of their three balls in a row.

Mills gave up 45 runs in his four overs but bowled Mitchell Starc on the last ball of the innings to dismiss Australia. In response, England made a strong start before Zampa LBWed Roy’s opinion. After an appeal, the on-field umpire refused, but Australia successfully reviewed.

Agar caught David Milan for eight off his left-arm spin, but the wicket proved to be a minor setback for England’s victory.

Buttler continued to punish Australia’s bowling, hitting sixes to complete his half-century. He had Johnny Barstow, who scored the winning run, and stayed with him until the end.

England are top of Group 1 with six points from Australia and South Africa, who beat Sri Lanka in the first match of the day.
