Aug 11, 2021: Stuart Broad has been ruled out of England’s upcoming second Test against India as he may be suffering from a possible injury.
He also skipped England’s net session on Tuesday because he was feeling pain in his calf. The medical team will review it and make a final decision on its availability for testing.
It should be noted that if Stuart Broad plays the second Test, it will be his 150th for England. Broad did not play well as he could not take a wicket in the first innings of the first Test against India which ended in a draw due to rain.
However, he looked in good shape on the fourth evening after taking a wicket. If Stuart Broad has to be ruled out due to fitness issues, then England has Mark Wood as a back up plan.
Wood could have come to the Nottingham side anyway, with the 90 mph option not available for England at the moment.
Craig Overton of Somerset has been named in the 18-man Test squad following the resignation of Ben Stokes over mental health.
An update from the England and Wales Cricket Board read: “England fast bowler Stuart Broad has broken his right calf in today’s warm-up at Lord’s. He was unable to train with the rest of the England squad this afternoon. Broad will have a scan tomorrow to determine the extent of his injury.
Meanwhile, Moin Ali has been recalled for the second Test between England and India. The right-arm off-break bowler has played only one Test match in the last two years. He played against India in Chennai six months ago. Now he is ready to play against India again at Lord’s.
In the absence of all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, England lost to key parts of the opener who pulled at Trent Bridge last week and were trying to balance the team.
In his last match, he bowled Indian captain Virat Kohli twice in the match but did not play any more. He took a scheduled rest as part of the England Cricket Board’s (ECB) rotation policy. After that test, Ali has been playing whiteball matches.
He last played as captain of the Birmingham Phoenix in the opening season of The Hundred. He ended the season with a great performance, his team is at the top. He also scored a brutal 59 against the Welsh Fire on Monday in which he hit five sixes and three fours in just 28 balls.
“We will look at the situation and weigh things, but they are in the best position to play,” said England captain Joe Root.
“That is why he has been called up to the squad for his ability with both the batsman and the ball. Although in short format, he is in great form at the moment, playing with great confidence, and we all know what he is capable of on the Test field. He scored big centuries and won the game with the ball and he is a good cricketer. If given a chance, he will be eager to impress and show everyone how good he is in Test cricket as well as whiteball cricket.”
