Lahore: After the Indian-born Delta variant, the California variant, namely Epsilon, of the coronavirus has also been seen among reported cases.
Punjab Secretary of Health has stated that around 70% of the cases in Lahore are of the Delta variant, however, a new type is also spreading around, the California variant, namely “Epsilon”.
According to reports, Health Secretary Sara Aslam has stated that a number of cases of the variant have been reported. So far, 5 out of 23 samples in Punjab have turned out to be Epsilon.
She further went on to say that this variant was first reported in April, in California in July 2020. It is said to be present more among the non-vaccinated people.
Previously, cases of Epsilon were reported in the US, Mexico and Canada.
It is to be noted that coronavirus cases are increasing rapidly in the country. Sindh has declared a weeklong lockdown, starting August 1 and going up to August 8. The Sindh Chief Minister has stated that the lockdown will be partial, and is an attempt to curtail the rapidly growing number of cases in the region, particularly Karachi.
