Oct 28, 2021: Turkish media reported on Wednesday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he expected to meet with his US counterpart Joe Biden on the sidelines of the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow.
Erdogan’s comments to journalists on a return flight from Azerbaijan came after the White House released Biden’s schedule for the G20 summit in Rome this weekend, which included a meeting with the Turkish leader. “The agenda of Rome and Glasgow seems to have changed,” Erdogan was quoted as saying. “We will probably meet in Glasgow instead of Rome.”
COP26 The UN Climate Conference kicks off on Sunday in Scotland and will run until November 12.
The meeting, the second between the two leaders since Biden was elected president, saw Washington withdraw from its F-35 fighter jet program to buy Russian missile defense systems after demanding compensation from Turkey.
The meeting will also lead to a new diplomatic tussle in which Erdogan threatened to deport US and nine other Western ambassadors for supporting a jailed Turkish civil society leader.
Erdogan, who accused the ambassadors of meddling in Turkey’s affairs, backed the threat after embassies issued statements pledging to stay out of Turkey’s internal affairs. Erdogan has close ties with Biden, whom he last met at the NATO summit in Brussels in June.
Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 defense air defense system in 2019 has disrupted relations, halting Ankara’s plans to buy about 100 next-generation American F-35s.
