Erdogan says Turkey cannot abandon ties with Russia or Ukraine

Feb 28, 2022: According to a report by Reuters, President Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey could not abandon its ties with Russia or Ukraine, amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, adding Ankara would implement a pact on passage from its straits to prevent an escalation of the war.

Turkey, which is a NATO ally, on Sunday called Russia’s attack a “war” in which it was allowed to use articles under a 1936 international agreement that restricted the passage of some Russian ships through the Turkish Strait.  Turkey has maritime borders with Ukraine and Russia and has good relations with both.

Speaking after the cabinet meeting, Erdogan criticized the “indecisive” stance of the United States and Western powers on the invasion of Ukraine, saying it was a sign of a failed international system. He said Turkey would not compromise on its promises to its allies, including NATO, but could not back down from “national interests” in its region.

He reiterated that the Russian attack was unacceptable to him.
